Overview
Zanzibar is the jewel of Africa's Indian Ocean coastline — an archipelago of coral islands off the coast of Tanzania whose history of Swahili, Arab, Portuguese, and British influence has produced a culture, architecture, and culinary tradition that is unlike anything else on the continent. The main island, Unguja, is what most people mean when they say 'Zanzibar' — a 90-by-40 kilometre island of pristine beaches, clove plantations, ancient coral towns, and extraordinary marine ecosystems.
Stone Town, Zanzibar's historic old city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a living museum of Swahili merchant culture. Its narrow labyrinthine streets — impossible to navigate without getting pleasantly lost — are lined with elaborately carved wooden doorways, Arab-style townhouses, the Old Fort, the spice market, and the House of Wonders. The evening food market at Forodhani Gardens, where local vendors prepare fresh seafood over charcoal while dhows anchor in the harbour behind them, is one of East Africa's most atmospheric dining experiences.
The beaches that ring Zanzibar's coastline are among the finest in the Indian Ocean. Nungwi in the north offers year-round swimming with calm water on both sides of the headland. Paje on the east coast is a world-class kitesurfing destination. Kendwa, Matemwe, and Bwejuu each offer their own character — some quiet and remote, others lively with beach bars and watersports. Mnemba Atoll, a private island north of the main coast, is one of the Indian Ocean's most celebrated snorkelling and diving destinations.
For Serene Sojourns, Zanzibar serves most frequently as the beach extension that completes an East Africa safari circuit — the island provides the perfect counterpoint to the dust and intensity of a Serengeti or Maasai Mara safari, and the combination of bush and beach is one of the most consistently satisfying travel experiences we deliver.
Signature Experiences
Best Time to Visit
Zanzibar is pleasant year-round, though the island has distinct seasons. The long rains (March–May) bring heavy rainfall and humidity — most visitors avoid this period. The short rains (November) are lighter and briefer. The best beach conditions are June–October and January–February. June–August is the busiest season with the most reliable weather across both north and east coasts. December–January is peak holiday season.

Practical Tips
Zanzibar is reached via Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ), with direct regional flights from Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, and Johannesburg. A Tanzania visa covers Zanzibar for mainland arrivals; visitors arriving directly to Zanzibar from outside Tanzania need a separate entry. The island is malaria-risk — mosquito repellent and long sleeves at dusk are recommended.
