Overview

Winston Churchill famously called Uganda 'the Pearl of Africa' — and the description has endured because it captures something true and important. Uganda is green, fertile, and extraordinarily biodiverse: a landlocked country straddling the equator that combines gorilla rainforest, savannah plains, Rift Valley lakes, the source of the Nile, and the most exceptional birdlife on the continent into a compact and accessible travel destination.

Uganda is home to over half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas — with Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park hosting approximately 650 individuals across habituated gorilla groups that can be visited on daily trekking permits. The gorilla encounter in Uganda is, by common consent among those who have experienced it, one of the most powerful wildlife encounters on earth.

Beyond gorillas, Uganda offers chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park — the best chimpanzee trekking destination in East Africa, with over 1,500 chimpanzees in the forest. Queen Elizabeth National Park in the west is famous for its tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector, as well as boat safaris on the Kazinga Channel where hippo, crocodile, and water buffalo gather in extraordinary numbers. Murchison Falls — where the entire Nile River is forced through a 7-metre gap in the rock — is one of Africa's most dramatic natural spectacles.

Uganda's birdlife is exceptional even by African standards: over 1,080 species have been recorded in the country, making it one of the world's top birding destinations. The Bwindi forest alone supports over 350 species, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics.

Best Time to Visit

Uganda can be visited year-round, though the two dry seasons (December–February and June–September) offer the most comfortable trekking conditions in Bwindi's rainforest. The dry season also provides better road conditions between destinations. Gorilla trekking is possible in all seasons — the forest receives rain year-round — but the dry season treks are less muddy and physically demanding. The wet seasons (March–May and October–November) bring lush green landscapes and fewer tourists.

Practical Tips

Uganda gorilla trekking permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and cost USD 700 per person. Permits must be booked in advance — we handle all procurement on behalf of our clients. Chimpanzee permits are significantly less expensive but also require advance booking. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry into Uganda. Malaria prophylaxis is essential. Most visitors fly into Entebbe International Airport.
