Overview

Rwanda is a country that defies expectations at every turn. The centrepiece of Rwanda's tourism offer is mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park — a chain of six extinct and dormant volcanoes in the northwest of the country, draped in dense afromontane forest, that is home to approximately 600 mountain gorillas. Rwanda's gorilla trekking is considered the premier experience of its kind: well-organised, professionally guided, deeply emotional, and surrounded by some of the finest luxury forest lodges on the continent.

Rwanda's gorilla permits are the most expensive in the region at USD 1,500 per person — a deliberate conservation policy that limits visitor numbers and channels significant revenue directly into gorilla protection and community development. The premium is widely considered justified by the quality and intimacy of the experience: Rwanda's habituated gorilla groups are among the most visited and behaviourally relaxed in the world.

Beyond gorillas, Rwanda offers chimpanzee trekking and canopy walks in Nyungwe Forest National Park — one of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse rainforests; golden monkey trekking in the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park; Akagera National Park (recently reintroduced lions and rhinos) for savannah wildlife; and Kigali — a clean, walkable, and culturally rich capital with excellent restaurants, the Kigali Genocide Memorial, and a rapidly growing arts and design scene.

Best Time to Visit

Rwanda is a year-round destination. The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer the most comfortable forest trekking conditions and the best photographic light in the volcanoes. The wet seasons bring misty, moody landscapes that are photographically beautiful in their own right — and permit prices do not change seasonally in Rwanda. Gorilla permits sell out months in advance during peak season.
