Overview

Kenya is where most of the world's idea of an 'African safari' was born — and it continues to define the category. Home to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, one of the world's greatest wildlife areas, Kenya combines extraordinary game viewing with a well-developed tourism infrastructure, dramatic landscape diversity, and cultural richness that rewards exploration at every level.

The Maasai Mara is Kenya's crown jewel: a vast grassland ecosystem in the southwestern corner of the country, contiguous with Tanzania's Serengeti to the south, and home to the highest density of predators in Africa. The Big Five are present throughout the year, and the annual wildebeest migration brings millions of animals through the reserve between July and October, creating river crossing spectacles that define wildlife filmmaking.

Beyond the Mara, Kenya offers an extraordinary range of safari environments. Amboseli National Park, in the shadow of Kilimanjaro, is famous for its large elephant herds against the backdrop of Africa's highest mountain. Samburu National Reserve in the arid north is home to Kenya's Special Five — species found nowhere else: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, Beisa oryx, and gerenuk. Lake Nakuru in the Rift Valley supports Kenya's rhino sanctuary and is famous for its flamingos.

Kenya's Indian Ocean coastline — centred on Diani Beach south of Mombasa — provides the perfect beach extension for any safari itinerary. The coral reef ecosystem, palm-fringed beaches, and seafood culture of the coast are a world away from the savannah interior, and the combination of bush and beach is one of the most consistently satisfying travel experiences we deliver.

Signature Experiences

Best Time to Visit

The Maasai Mara is best visited between July and October for the Great Migration's river crossings. January and February are excellent for the Mara's resident wildlife and calving season in the Serengeti. Amboseli is best in the dry seasons (January–February and June–October) when the mountain is clearest and elephant viewing most concentrated. Diani Beach is pleasant year-round, with peak season aligning with the Kenyan school holiday calendar.

Practical Tips

Kenya is one of Africa's most accessible international destinations, with excellent flight connections from Europe, the Middle East, and beyond into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. The East Africa Tourist Visa (USD 100) covers Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for all safari areas. Nairobi is a good overnight base at the start and end of a Kenya safari.
