Overview

Zambia is the home of the walking safari — a form of wildlife encounter that was pioneered here and remains the most intimate and authentic way to experience the African bush. In Zambia, you do not observe Africa through a vehicle window. You walk through it, guided by one of the continent's most respected traditions of professional field guiding.

South Luangwa National Park is Zambia's safari heartland and one of Africa's finest game areas. The Luangwa River — and the oxbow lagoons it creates as it meanders through the valley — supports extraordinary concentrations of hippo and crocodile, while the surrounding woodland is home to one of Africa's highest densities of leopard. South Luangwa was where Norman Carr pioneered the walking safari in the 1950s, and the tradition lives on through a network of world-class specialist camps that define Zambian safari culture.

The Lower Zambezi National Park offers a completely different experience — river-based safaris by canoe and motorboat along the Zambezi, with elephants drinking on the banks, buffalo crossing at dusk, and tigerfish rising in the channels. Like South Luangwa, it is a low-volume, high-quality destination where the emphasis is on experience over infrastructure.

Zambia shares Victoria Falls with Zimbabwe — the town of Livingstone on the Zambian side offering a quieter, more relaxed base than its Zimbabwean counterpart, with excellent access to the eastern cataract and the renowned Knife Edge Bridge view directly above the boiling pot below the falls.

Signature Experiences

Best Time to Visit

The dry season (May–October) is the premier time for game viewing in both South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi. The bush thins dramatically, wildlife concentrates along water sources, and the camps operate at full capacity. Walking safaris are most productive in the dry season when visibility is excellent. Many South Luangwa camps close during the deep rains (December–March) when the valley becomes inaccessible. The emerald season (November) offers exceptional value, abundant birdlife, and the start of the rains before full closure.

Practical Tips

Most Zambian safari camps are accessed by light aircraft — charter flights from Lusaka or Livingstone connect the main national parks. The KAZA UniVisa (USD 50) covers both Zambia and Zimbabwe. Malaria prophylaxis is essential. Zambia is considered one of Africa's safest countries for tourists and its safari operators are among the most professionally trained on the continent.
