Overview
East Africa is where most people's idea of 'Africa' lives. The sweeping savannahs, the acacia-silhouetted sunsets, the thundering herds of wildebeest, the mountain gorillas in ancient rainforest, the Maasai warriors of the Rift Valley, the volcanic peaks and crater lakes — all of this is East Africa, and all of it is accessible through a single, well-planned journey.
The region encompasses some of the world's most iconic wildlife destinations: Kenya's Maasai Mara, Tanzania's Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park. It also encompasses extraordinary landscape diversity — from the Indian Ocean coastline of Zanzibar and Diani to the snow-capped peaks of Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, from the alkaline Rift Valley lakes to the verdant highlands of the Rwandan hill country.
The Great Wildebeest Migration — the annual movement of more than 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra, and 350,000 gazelle between the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara — is the world's greatest wildlife spectacle and East Africa's most celebrated natural event. It happens continuously throughout the year, with different phases of the migration occurring in different parts of the ecosystem at different times.
East Africa is also the region through which Serene Sojourns designs many of our most ambitious multi-country circuits. A Kenya–Tanzania combination, a Gorilla–Safari–Beach trilogy, or a full East Africa Grand Tour connecting Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, and Zanzibar — these are the journeys that define the Serene Sojourns offering in this region.
Signature Experiences
Best Time to Visit
East Africa has two primary visitor seasons determined by rainfall patterns. The long rains (March–May) and short rains (November) are generally avoided for safari, though they offer lush landscapes and lower accommodation rates. The primary dry season (June–October) is the peak safari window — the Maasai Mara's river crossings occur July–October, and this is the optimal time for the migration. The secondary dry season (January–February) is excellent for the Serengeti's calving season, when 500,000 wildebeest calves are born in a concentrated six-week period.

Practical Tips
East Africa requires careful itinerary sequencing to manage internal flights, cross-border logistics, and permit procurement (particularly for gorilla trekking). We manage all of this on behalf of our clients and trade partners. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for all East African safari destinations. Yellow fever vaccination is required for Uganda and recommended for Rwanda and Tanzania.
